What Is Atmospheric Fogging and How Does It Work?

Cleanliness and hygiene have never been more important, especially in the wake of the latest global health crisis. One highly effective method that is causing a stir is atmospheric fogging — a long-tested method of air and surface disinfection in contained spaces by the application of a mist. So, what is atmospheric fogging, and how does it work? Simply put, it is the release of a disinfectant solution into the air as minute droplets. These droplets, typically in the range several microns in diameter, become akin to a gas, spreading evenly throughout the space and reaching to locations that usual cleaning leaves behind.

The treatment relies on a fogging machine, which breaks up a liquid disinfectant into ultra-fine particles using pressure or ultrasonic technology. On release, the mist remains suspended in the air, settling gradually on surfaces — walls, ceilings, floors, furniture, and equipment. In contrast to wiping or spraying, fogging involves no direct application; the mist engulfs the room and treats it comprehensively from end to end.

One of the reasons fogging is so appealing is that it can target airborne pathogens. Standard cleaning methods only clean surfaces, leaving bacteria and viruses floating around in the air unaffected. Fogging targets both, which is why it is especially useful in places like hospitals, clinics, laboratories, and public transport, where germs are easily transferred through the air.

The other benefit that is most important is consistency. Hand washing is prone to human lapses — missed spots or spotty application are possible. With fogging, the disinfectant reaches all the areas equally, into the corners and the out-of-the-way spots that are otherwise hard to access.

There are two main types of classifications of fogging systems: thermal foggers and ultra-low volume (ULV) cold foggers. Thermal foggers emit a visible fog by employing heat to vaporize the disinfectant, which evaporates quickly — these are typically used outdoors or large industrial settings. ULV foggers rather employ high pressure rather than heat to create microscopic droplets, and are therefore better for use indoors where control, precision, and low residue are crucial.

Choosing the right disinfectant is important. Not every solution can be used as an aerosol. Hydrogen peroxide, quaternary ammonium compounds, and chlorine dioxide are common choices depending on the requirements of the site. The disinfectant needs to be effective against a wide range of pathogens without being dangerous to people once the area is properly ventilated.

Safety is one of the common issues. With qualified staff and licensed products, fogging in the atmosphere is wholly safe. It is required, however, that spaces to be fogged must remain vacant during fogging and temporarily afterward, when the mist will be able to settle and the air will be allowed to circulate. Once done, the space is not only safe to return to but is also much cleaner.

The uses are diverse. In the medical field, fogging is used to disinfect operating theaters, patient ward facilities, and laboratories. In food preparation, it guarantees cleanliness in areas that are inaccessible with manual cleaning methods. Schools, gyms, offices, public toilets, and even airline cabins are now increasingly incorporating fogging in their cleaning routines. The COVID-19 pandemic has only pushed it to speed up its incorporation into normal cleaning procedures in the majority of organisations.

It is important to note that fogging is not a replacement for regular cleaning. It will function best as an additional element. Physical cleaning removes the grime and dirt, and fogging adds microbial control. The best sanitation procedures combine both to achieve the highest levels of cleanliness and security.
